June 13, 2016

While the nation mourns a senseless tragedy, local residents are finding ways to show their support for the victims of the shooting at Pulse in Orlando.

Here are a few things you can do in the Houston area to help raise awareness and/or lend your support:

University of Houston-Clear Lake will host a vigil on June 16 from 4:30PM – 5:30PM. The Intercultural Student Services Office is hosting the vigil at the UHCL Alumni Plaza (University address: 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston, TX, 77058). The official Facebook Event can be found HERE.

A guided meditation and healing vigil will be held at Memorial Park (6501 Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77007) on June 22 from 7PM – 9PM. The official Facebook Event can be found HERE.

More information on official vigils as they come up can be found on the #WeAreOrlando website.

Orlando residents turned out in record numbers immediately following the tragic Pulse shooting. Blood banks reached capacity soon after a call was put out, but more donations will be needed as they work through that supply.

It is never a bad time to remind everyone about the importance of local blood supplies, so check out the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center for a location or drive near you.

Anyone who is willing and able to lend financial support to victims can visit the official GoFundMe page, run in partnership with Equality Florida and the National Center for Victims of Crime.

There are a number of great resources in the Houston area serving the LGBT community

Also, the Houston LGBT Pride Celebration is scheduled for Saturday, June 25. Never has there been a more appropriate time to get out and show your support.
