6.7.16: National – (Politics): Despite knowing that any and everything can and will happen in American politics – once upon a time a Washington D.C. Mayor was caught smoking crack; with perfect impunity, the Philadelphia Police Department dropped a bomb on a house in a black neighborhood and killed eleven people; both a professional wrestler and a professional bodybuilder became American Governors; and a black man was elected to the highest office in the land – I still found myself surprised by Mr. Paul D. Ryan’s decision to endorse for president Mr. Donald Trump, an unforgettable personality who entered politics in 2015 as a fringe candidate and became, despite much opposition and controversy, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, a feat that still has many observers puzzled yet studious to Mr. Trump’s appeal.
Mr. Ryan, who replaced Mr. John Boener as the Speaker of the House, branded himself as a leader of standards and principles, a man who could unite and strengthen the GOP; restore its luster; and help to secure the White House in 2016. So revered, it appears, is Mr. Ryan, who eight years ago ran was Mr. Mitt Romney’s running-mate, that he was rumored, and some say pressured, to mount a last minute bid for the presidency.
One of the narratives marketed by the GOP is that the most horrid thing that could happen to America is that Mrs. Hillary Clinton wins the presidency. Because of the perceived danger Mrs. Clinton represents, the GOP is focused solely on impeding her campaign and having their nominee declared the victor.

The current strategy executed by the GOP is extremely shortsighted: embrace and endorse a polarizing, inappropriate, immature and ill-informed candidate who many view unfavorably in order to compete against Mrs. Clinton rather than completely disavow him and his divisive policies, and maybe even concede the race to Mrs. Clinton, in order to preserve the GOP and its values for future generations.
Throwing in the towel may be perceived as weak, but weakness is less harmful to others than recklessness. By not rejecting Mr. Trump but instead falling in line behind him, the GOP is engaging in reckless behavior. Senator Lindsey Graham, who’s among the most visible GOP leaders and who ran a brief 2015-2016 campaign for the presidency, is looking to preserve whatever integrity and goodwill the GOP has left by urging fellow Republicans to un-endorse Mr. Trump after he made comments about a Federal judge with Mexican heritage that Mr. Ryan called a “textbook racist comment.”
Because Mr. Trump wants to build a wall that keeps out Mexicans, he doesn’t believe Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who was born in Indiana to Mexican immigrants, can rule fairly in the class-action lawsuit against Trump University.
“This is the most un-American thing from a politician since Joe McCarthy. If anybody was looking for an off-ramp, this is probably it. There’ll come a time when the love of country will trump hatred of Hillary,” said Senator Graham.
At moment, Senator Graham is an outlier, as his colleagues are hesitant to call Mr. Trump a racist, let alone disavow him completely. But Senator Graham, despite endorsing Mr. Trump in the first place, is now on the right side of history. His challenge, though, is to get his peers to see the circumstances as he does and to recognize that their vision of the present isn’t clear but rather extremely shortsighted.
